Selecting Helmet Earphones
They are used to provide great quality music to your motorcycle helmet without ruining your hearing in the process. Earphones are a good alternative to helmet speakers and amplifiers because they provide for noise isolation. When it comes to them sometimes the old saying “You get what you pay for” rings very true. It is often not a good idea to purchase the cheapest ones out there. Your best bet in terms of quality will be custom molded earphones, but these can cost around $200.
For less than half of that you can purchase earphones with noise isolating earplugs, such as the Etymotic ER-6i. Ones such as these will often come with extra filters and ear plug options so you can select those that are most comfortable. Each person has a different shape to their ear, so it is nice to have choices. Often the foam tip earphones will be the most comfortable. These will also include filters to prevent ear wax from damaging the speakers.
It is a good idea to try your new earphones with the helmet you plan to use. Most helmets have a tight fit and you want to be able to put your helmet on and take it off without disturbing the earphones. You also want to check for noise isolation by using them at your regular cruising speed. You should not be able to hear your engine except when you are going through the gears.
A good set of them will give you excellent sound and noise isolation, even at high speed on your motorcycle. The earphones should be easy to install and stay in place. It is a good idea to purchase a set that comes with extra pieces and parts so that you can adjust them for fit and comfort.
